Hudson River Valley Farms cover
Last summer and the winter and autumn before I criss-crossed the Hudson Valley dozens of times to capture the images that have now been published in my new book, “Hudson River Valley Farms”, a photography driven look at the whole range of family farms, organic and sustainable farms that line the valley from Westchester and Rockland counties all the way up to the far reaches of the Catskills. From Stone Barns and Dr. Davies farm in the south up to Goold Orchards and Heather Ridge Farm at the northern reaches, this book gives you the story of forty-four farms and is guaranteed to make you hungry!
As you have likely heard, there is a huge movement back to organic and healthy eating happening which also incorporates eating locally grown foods. The farmers I met and photographed were young people going back to the land but using new technologies and knowledge, as well as older established farmers who have figured out how to survive the onslaught of government subsidized corporate factory farming that has come to dominate our food supply. I provided a sneak preview of the book in my January 30th newsletter (remember those cute alpacas?), which you can see either by scrolling to it at the bottom of this page or just click here.
Blooming Hill Farm in Blooming Grove NY is one of the farms included in the book. Guy Jones is the farmer, shown here plowing one of his fields with his son.
Blooming Hill Farm has an incredible farm stand open on the weekends, where the most beautiful and flavorful produce can be found. Hawthorne Valley Farm is another farm featured in the book, and that is where these cute and filthy pigs made their home.
Hawthorne Valley also produces wonderful salad greens, which they sell (with the rest of their output) at the very well-known NYC farmer’s market in Union Square.
The book is available through all of the usual channels but please buy it through your local bookstore, or if you would like to have a personalized copy signed by the photographer, email me and I’ll be happy to sell you a copy from my supply. Eat well!
