It seems that everyone this year has been really beat up by this winter. Maybe it’s the economy, maybe it’s because winter weather really did start early here in the northeast – I had one garden spigot freeze on me in mid-November, but whatever the reason, boy are we glad to see the crocuses! I hope you are too.

Is there anything more smile inducing after a long dreary winter than these little cheer-bringers?
The only down side to them is that they are so small, so unless there are dozens or hundreds planted in masses, the impact isn’t as great and to get a compelling image I need to get close. So I pulled out the trusty macro equipment to make these images, something I haven’t used much since my days doing the White Flower Farm catalogue.
These should bring a smile to your face.

And for my friends in the southwest who are sick of hearing us northerners complain about our winters, here’s an image I made last month at the New England Grows show up in Boston. It’s just a box full of succulents in pots, but the way it was all packed in together was pretty cool, and it made for a fun composition.
